Formal Family Garden

This heritage property was surrounded by a large garden which was overlooked by neighbouring properties. The client wanted to increase privacy in the garden.

The property owner also wanted to incorporate features for entertaining both young children and teenagers, without compromising on the serenity of the formal garden. This was a classic challenge of ‘function v. style’.

Garden Society designed a true family-friendly garden which respected and enhanced the formality of the property:

  • Lush, sweeping lawns and child-friendly features such as a tree swing, a cubby house, a trampoline.
  • A swimming pool for both adults and children to enjoy.
  • To enhance the formal characteristics of the garden and house, we used a timeless plant palette of green and white, with classic planting such as hedged box, viburnum, and pleached trees.
  • For instant privacy from neighbouring properties, we sourced trees in an advanced stage of growth, instead of waiting for saplings to grow to the desired height. Ornamental Pear trees provided a vertical backdrop for lower growing plants.
